Zrenjanin Water Treatment Plant completes first open days, expands educational visits

March 10, 2026 – The Zrenjanin Water Treatment Plant successfully concluded the first edition of its “Behind the Tap – Open House Program,” welcoming members of the community to visit the facility and gain firsthand insight into how safe and reliable drinking water is produced and managed.

Organized by Metito Utilities, a global investor, developer, and operator of sustainable water management solutions, the initiative invited citizens to explore the treatment plant through guided tours, offering a transparent view of the processes, technologies, and monitoring systems that ensure the quality and reliability of the water production. Visitors had the opportunity to walk through the key stages of the treatment process and meet the team responsible for the daily operation of the facility.

Following the positive engagement during the first Open Days, the program will continue to expand, with the plant preparing to host future visits in collaboration with universities, technical institutions, and educational groups, supporting knowledge exchange and providing students and professionals with direct exposure to modern water treatment practices.

With an investment of over €20 million, the Zrenjanin Water Treatment Public–Private Partnership (PPP) Project was developed using a tailored, multi-stage treatment solution designed specifically to address the complex composition of groundwater in the Pannonian Basin, including elevated levels of arsenic, ammonia, and methane.

Implemented by Metito Utilities and awarded by the City of Zrenjanin and the public utility company Vodovod i kanalizacija, the project represents the first public–private partnership in the water supply sector in Serbia.

The facility began operations in May 2025, treating water in full compliance with national drinking water standards. Following confirmation by the competent authorities, the long-standing ban on the use of tap water for drinking purposes in Zrenjanin was officially lifted in October 2025, restoring safe drinking water access to the city’s residents for the first time in over two decades.
