USD 22 MILLION PROJECT COMPLETED FOR
THE MAXUS OIL COMPANY
METITO, the international water and wastewater treatment
experts operating from their regional headquarters
in Sharjah, have completed a unique water treatment
project to supply desalinated water to thousands
of oil workers operating on offshore oil rigs in
Indonesia.
The USD 22 million contract undertaken for Maxus,
the second largest oil company operating in Indonesia,
is a vital part of the service systems required
to keep the oil rigs operational in an area which
is 90 kilometers from the island of Java.
To solve the fresh water supply requirement METITO
has constructed a sea water desalination plant on
the tiny Pabelokan Island that is located in the
heart of the oil rich Sumatra Sea.
The Pabelokan Island operates as a service center
for eight major offshore oil drilling platforms
with a workforce of over 2000. Sea water is drawn
from the sea and later desalinated by METITO's plant
on the island before being transferred by small
water tanker ships to individual oil drilling platforms.

Mutaz
Ghandour, METITO's Group Managing Director, said:
"This is a remote and offshore location which
required a specialized concept to ensure the continuous
supply of desalinated water for drinking and other
purposes to World Health Organisation standards,
for all the scattered oil rigs.
"We believe that the model we have successfully
developed in Indonesia can be applied to other offshore
oil industry locations around the world from the
Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Mexico."
YPF Maxus South East Sumatra B.V. corporation, which
operates in partnership with the Government of Indonesia,
selected METITO due to its local presence in Indonesia
and global know-how in the desalination field.
The plant constructed by METITO on the island can
produce up to 600,000 gallons of treated water per
day. To ensure constant production and supply of
fresh water to the oil rigs every vital component
installed has a standby in case of failure.
Water produced at the desalination plant meets approved
World Health Organisation standards for drinking
water and is sufficient to supply the 2,000 people
operating the rigs and the necessary process water
for various needs every day. The plant supplied
is fully automated and features high reliability
for continuous uninterrupted performance.
Mr. Ghandour added: "This is another project
which METITO has successfully implemented under
a build, own and operate basis for a prestigious
client. It demonstrates our ability to implement
projects in the most challenging environments in
the world on time and on budget.
"We are convinced that the type of techniques
and innovation we have used in Indonesia can be
applied to other major offshore oil producing regions
including the Arabian Gulf."
Other challenging and complex projects undertaken
by METITO for industrial requirements in South East
Asia include high purity water process systems for
South Bangkok combined cycle power plant, Benjarmasin
on Kalimantan Island, Indonesia and the Malacca
Refinery in Malaysia.
Nabil Wareeth, METITO's regional manager for South
East Asia, flew in from Jakarta to participate with
his management at the press conference to announce
the successful completion and inauguration of the
Maxus project.
METITO is the leading international company for
the provision of water and wastewater treatment
plants, desalination plants and water supply projects.
It was founded in 1958 and has project management
capabilities to undertake similar and much larger
projects worldwide. In the UAE, METITO manages its
Middle East, Africa and Asia operation from their
Regional Headquarters in Sharjah, and have factory
and laboratory facilities in the Hamriya Free Zone.
