METITO COMPLETES DHS 24 MILLION CONTRACT TO SUPPLY, INSTAL AND COMMISSION WATER TREATMENT AND SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS TO RUWAIS HOUSING COMPLEX IN ABU DHABI EMIRATE.

29 December 2001

METITO (Overseas) Limited has completed work on a Dhs 24 million contract to supply state of the art water treatment and sewage treatment works as part of an infrastructure contract package to serve over 1300 homes in the Ruwais Housing Complex in Abu Dhabi Emirate.

The project has been finally commissioned and handed over by METITO through Al Muhairy General Contracting Co. to ADNOC who is responsible for the overall new expansion project that is creating 1300 new homes in Ruwais. Workers employed at ADNOC’s Ruwais Refinery Complex will be housed in the new homes.

METITO, which has its headquarters for Europe, Asia and Africa in Sharjah, completed the two-year contract on schedule after commencing work in July 1999. Scope of work for the company on the project included the design and building of the mechanical and electrical components of the sewage treatment plant, pumping stations and a SCADA monitoring system for the plant.

The project is the latest in a series of major infrastructure projects that METITO has undertaken in Abu Dhabi Emirate on behalf of Government and Industrial sectors. In Ruwais, the main contractor on the project was Al Muhairy General Contracting Co. and the consultant was DMGM.

METITO (Abu Dhabi) LLC, Branch Manager, Mr Omar Al Zoubi, said: “ We have been very proud to once again use our infrastructure expertise in both water treatment and waste water systems to help a major development in Abu Dhabi Emirate.

In a desert environment such as Ruwais, we were also determined to ensure that the systems we introduced were environmentally-friendly and that the sewage treatment works were designed to ensure that treated effluent could be used for irrigation purposes in and around the housing complex.”
The sewage treatment works installed can handle up to 5000 square metres of effluent every day to cater for the estimated population of 5200 people. A main lift station with four pumps has also been established to collect sewage generated from the new township and pump it along a 400 metre pipeline to be biologically treated to a quality where treated water can be used for irrigation purposes.

The METITO has also introduced a water treatment system where potable water is fed into a 4 km network of pipes to supply the 1300 homes. Water is treated using a chlorination system and stored in two giant underground storage tanks each having a capacity of 2.6 million gallons of fresh water.

The final element of the project was creating a SCADA system – a special software package that can be used for monitoring the operation of the Sewage Treatment Plant, Water Treatment Plant and Main Lift Station at Ruwais. The SCADA system monitors the entire plant and ensures that the status of the systems is regularly communicated to both the Main Monitoring Station for the housing complex and the Ruwais Refinery.
METITO is the leading international company for the provision of wastewater treatment, desalination and water supply projects. In the UAE it operates its European, Asian and African operations from its regional headquarters in Sharjah and has a factory and laboratory facility in the Hamriya Free Zone.

METITO is an international company that was founded in 1958 by Mr Farouk Ghandour, its present Chairman, and has project management capabilities to undertake similar and much larger projects worldwide.
