Metito to build desalination plants for Indonesian Ports Authority

Metito has signed a contract with the Ports Authority of Indonesia to build, own, operate and transfer three sea-water desalination plants. The contract, known as “Pelindo 1”, includes the production, delivery and sale of potable water for a concession period of 14 years at Belawan, Dumai and Tanjung Balai Karimun ports on east Sumatra Island.

“Metito’s success in securing this contract, following an open tender, in the face of strong international competition, can only encourage stakeholders, and indeed, other UAE based companies to be more aggressive in international markets”, said Mr. Bassem El Halabi, Metito Group Business Development Director.

The Pelindo 1 plants are to produce potable water conforming to international and W.H.O. standards so as to enable the three ports to offer fresh water supplies to docking and mooring passenger ships and sea-freighters. The company intends to construct sea water desalination plants and filling facilities, on site, for each port.

Mr. Nabil Wareeth, President Director of Pt METITO Indonesia says, “It has been the result of two years negotiation and hard work, yet the real work begins now. We are confident that this project will generate substantial and increasing business to the “Pelindo 1” ports and the surrounding areas over the next 14 years and beyond”.

A substantial portion of the design and supply of specialised equipment will be sourced from Metito Overseas Limited, UAE. With a presence in Indonesia since the early 1990’s Metito continues to be a keen but selective investor in the huge and growing desalination, water and waste water treatment sector in that country.

“We would like to think of this partnership between the Indonesian Port Authority and Metito as an added strength to our already good business relations in Indonesia. Projects such as “Pelindo 1” will support growth in both the Indonesian and Emarati economies in terms of job creation and increased business prospects, which will help in forming a lasting bond of mutual business interests between the two countries”, added Mr. Mutaz Ghandour, CEO – Metito.
