METITO AWARDED AED 12 MILLION CONTRACT TO PROVIDE SPECIALISED WATER TREATMENT PLANT FOR IRAQ/HARTHA POWER STATION

10 March 2004

METITO, the international water treatment, desalination and wastewater treatment experts have won an AED 12 million (USD3.12 million) turnkey contract to provide a range of highly specialised water treatment schemes for the 800 MW Power Plant, in Hartha Iraq under the USAID reconstruction program for Iraq.

The plant that is situated 15 km north of Basrah was originally built back in 1979 and had four units rated at 200 MW each. During the 1991 Gulf war units 2 and 3 were destroyed. Only 1and 4 are presently operating. The units are fuelled by light oil, crude oil or natural gas. Some water treatment equipment were also damaged during the Iraq/Iran war and the 1991 Gulf war.

METITO is working in partnership with the Marmarchi group as the local partner in charge of the civil activities and installation works utilizing local Iraqi manpower. The main contractor is Bechtel International Inc., USA. METITO has already undertaken a number of major projects with Bechtel worldwide. Among these, is the AED 56 million water and wastewater treatment plants for Nubaria Power Plant in Egypt.

METITO turnkey scope in Hartha project includes design, fabrication, shop testing, delivery, civil works, site installation, testing, commissioning and start up of a wide range of water units for the power plant. These include pre-treatment of the Shatt Al Arab water, a range of chemical injection systems, double stage RO system, high purity demineralised water. The project is to restore and replace all the damaged parts to put the plant in its full 100 percent designed capacity.

METITO will also provide local training for engineers and other operating staff of the power plant allowing them effectively to use and optimise the high tech investment being put in place.
An essential element of the project will be the extensive use of membrane technology including a double stage Reverse Osmosis, EDI new advanced technology used by METITO on projects worldwide for the production of high purity water used in a wide range of applications.

METITO Jordan and Iraq General Manager, Moustafa Hasan recently said: 'As a world leader in the application of membrane technology, METITO OVERSEAS LTD and its 600 staff members in the region are very proud to be using this technique to create the purity of water required at a plant of this nature. The restoration of this plant will help Bechtel restore power supply to the local Iraqis in the Basrah region.

We have extensive experience in this sector around the world and have worked a great deal with companies in a range of industrial sectors. A project of this nature requires highly specialised systems and equipment to meet the highest international environmental standards – Standards that are fully met by all METITO projects.'

METITO is the leading international company for the provision of desalination, water and wastewater treatment projects. Work recently started on the company's new global AED50 million headquarters at Techno Park in Dubai. When completed the headquarter facility built on an area of 500,000 square feet will house 500 engineers, scientists, and executives in this strategic location off the main highway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
